One of the things that will be assessed at your initial consult visit is the color of your skin using what is called the Fitzpatrick scale. Knowing your skin type helps us predict your response to laser tattoo treatments as well as letting us know which lasers can be safely used on your skin. The Fitzpatrick scale was developed in 1975. It rates skin color from Type 1 to Type 6.
Type 1 is very pale and Type 6 is very dark. The types between are gradations of these ends of the spectrum. Type 1 skin is very light and always burns when exposed to the sun. Type 2 tans a bit but still burns easily. Type 3 would be a darker skin toned Caucasian. These first 3 skin types can be treated with standard Nd:Yag lasers (the laser we use for about 90% of tattoos) as well as Ruby or Alexandrite lasers (these may be needed for green or stubborn black inks). Type 4 skin is light brown such as Hispanic or Asian skin and mainly tans with sun exposure. Type 5 skin is lighter skinned African-American and Type 6 skin is very dark such as dark skinned African-American and does not burn with sun exposure. If the Ruby or Alexandrite laser is used on Type 4-6 skin types, it has a higher chance of damaging the normal skin pigment and could cause hypopigmentation.
At Remove A Tattoo laser tattoo removal clinic we will use the laser that will most effectively get rid of your ink while protecting your normal skin pigment. Call us today at 414-617-2849.
