Recently, Today posted an interesting article about women who wait until after they are 40 years old to get their first tattoo. We typically think of tattoos as something that younger people do – something that seen as an impulsive decision. “You’ll regret that when you’re older,” is a common admonishment many people with tattoos hear. As the number of Americans who have tattoos increases, many tattoo artists are reporting seeing more women getting their first tattoo later in life.
As laser tattoo removal experts, we wondered what role age plays in tattoo regret. Does waiting until later in life reduce your chances of regret later on? Does it really matter? To explore this question, we decided to look at The Harris Poll – a survey of 2,225 adults surveyed online in October 2015.
According to the poll, tattoos are still much more common with Millennials and Gen Xers than they are with Baby Boomers. Almost half of the Millennials surveyed reported having one or more tattoos and almost a third of the Gen Xers reported being inked. Only 13% of Baby Boomers, on the other hand, reported having tattoos.
While the majority of people who have tattoos do not regret them, one out of every four people reported regretting the decision to get a tattoo. Most of the reasons for regret had to do with age.
The number one reason for regretting the tattoo was that they were too young when they got the tattoo, leading us to believe that waiting until you are older to get tattooed may decrease regret. Other reasons included: personality changing over time, not fitting in with lifestyle anymore, names of ex-lovers, doesn’t fit in with career, and isn’t meaningful. These are all things that tend to settle themselves over time.
Let’s say you wait until you are 40 to get a tattoo. You already have a good idea what fits in with your lifestyle. You know what you want out of life. You have enough experience to know what is meaningful to you. You may still have ex-lovers in your life, but you have a good understanding of what permanent means. You most likely have an established career. It makes sense that those who wait would experience less regret – it can be a good idea to wait until you get tattoos until you are relatively settled in life.
It is important to keep in mind, that there are many people who do get tattoos at a young age and never regret them. Maybe waiting for a tattoo isn’t feasible or maybe you want to enjoy your ink while you are young. In our opinion, when making the decision to get a tattoo, the most important thing to do to avoid regret is to think about your future and imagine how the tattoo will fit in – whether you are young or whether you are more mature in age.
