Chinese letters are a popular choice for tattoos in the United States; so one might think tattoos are culturally acceptable there. However, recent news shows that there is a strong stigma against tattoos in China.
In January, China placed a ban on mainstream media showing hip-hop culture and actors or actress with tattoos. This ban is a concerted effort to rid the country of what the government considers to be “low taste content.” The media is now required to abide by a set of four rules set in place by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China:
- Absolutely do not use actors whose heart and morality are not aligned with the party and whose morality is not noble
- Absolutely do not use actors who are tasteless, vulgar and obscene
- Absolutely do not use actors whose ideological level is low and have no class
- Absolutely do not use actors with stains, scandals and problematic moral integrity
Included in these four rules are actors with tattoos, any hip-cop culture, any counter culture or sub-culture and any dispirited culture.
Historically tattoos in China were given to prisoners or ethnic minorities. If someone committed a serious crime, their face would be tattooed before they were banished from their community. If they tried to come back everyone would know the criminal acts they did by their tattoo. Tattoos were also heavily associated with gangs and organized crime. This negative historical association has lasted a long time and there are many who still think that tattoos are for bad people.
This stigma has been changing over the past decade as more and more high profile actors and sports stars have been sporting tattoos. Tattoo shops are seeing more clientele and more young people are getting inked. Many spoke out on social media against the governmental ban on tattoos – a view that seems to be stuck in the past.
