Most tattoo inks are well tolerated by the skin. However, there are times when the body identifies the ink as an invader and produces an allergic response. If this occurs, the tattoo site can become swollen, itchy, tender and red. The reaction can be immediate or it may occur weeks or even months after you get the tattoo. Red inks are the most common culprit. Sometimes the inflammation can be treated with a topical steroid cream and other times the ink may need to be removed. This in not in the “DIY” category. Seek medical attention if you are having an allergic reaction to the ink. Besides being annoying, if you do have an allergic reaction to the ink and the recommendation has been made to get the ink out of your skin, doing so can be a challenge.
Normally to remove a tattoo we use a laser to break up the ink and your body clears the ink away. However, if you are already having an allergic reaction to the ink that is localized to the tattoo site, breaking up that ink could possibly lead to a more generalized allergic reaction called anaphylaxis (think wheezing, throat swelling, not being able to breath and swelling up like a balloon). This is why at Remove A Tattoo- laser tattoo removal clinic, we always ask if you had any reaction to the ink when you got the tattoo. If the answer is yes, and you really want to get rid of the tattoo, the only safe option may be to have the tattoo excised. That would be something done by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.
