There are many reasons why people get tattoos. One common reason is to preserve a memory or to honor someone. Tattoo technology is ever changing and there are countless innovative (and possibly creepy) ways to honor your loved ones with ink. From realistic portraits to names to sound wave tattoos to DNA tattoos – the list is never ending. Each tattoo type has it’s own unique considerations when it comes to regret and removal. But what about those who want to honor loved ones without getting tattoos? Now there is a way to preserve your loved one’s tattooed skin and turn it into wall art.
A new company called Save My Ink Forever is in the tattoo preservation business. Save My Ink was developed by a father and son pair of morticians from Ohio. They developed their own highly secret process to preserve and frame the tattoos of the deceased as a keepsake for their families.
How does it work? The framed skin art starts at about $1,600. If a family decides they would like to memorialize their loved one in this manner, they contact Save My Ink Forever. A tattoo removal kit (not to be confused with laser tattoo removal) is sent along with instructions for preservation is sent to the funeral director. The funeral director removes the tattoo, places it in a dry preservation, and returns it to Save My Ink where it undergoes a 3-4 month preservation process. The preserved piece of tattooed skin is then framed and returned to the family.
People remember their loved ones in many different ways. If you aren’t keen on the idea of your tattoo being framed art one day, you may want to consider laser tattoo removal.
