Marines have the strictest tattoo policy in the military. Marines can only have tattoos that are covered by the standard physical training uniform – a t-shirt and green shorts. This means that tattoos on the head, neck, wrists, knees, elbows, and hands are strictly prohibited. Many marines have complained about the policy, saying that it is one of the biggest barriers to re-enlistment. While the Army, Navy, and Air Force have all relaxed their tattoo policies in the last few years, the Marines have refused to relax the policy.
Many were surprised when a recruiter for the Marines announced at the beginning of April that qualified applicants could seek waivers to the tattoo policy, allowing them to join the Marines. The recruiter reported on social media that there was no telling how long the waivers could be obtained, but that they would allow Marines with prior service and tattoos that did not fit the guidelines to join the Marine Forces Reserve.
Marine officials responded with an announcement that the Marines were not changing their tattoo policy and that the updated guidelines from 2016 still hold true. The announcement was a misunderstanding from an internal communication.
Thankfully, those who wish to enlist and have out of regulation tattoos can remove their tattoos with laser tattoo removal. Laser tattoo removal is a proven and effective method for removing unwanted tattoos.
