Laser tattoo removal is the current gold standard for either removing or lightening your tattoo. But there may be something truly different (and possibly better) on the horizon. A company called Soliton is developing a device that combines acoustic (sound waves) along with laser to shatter the ink. The idea is to hit the ink with different treatments to speed the breaking up and subsequent clearing of the ink. They call it the RAP (Rapid Acoustic Pulse) Device. Their web site lists the clinical trial results here. The results look impressive. They found in a select population of 11 patients, all patients had a 76-100% fading of their tattoo after just 2-3 treatments. The trial results do not mention what type of laser was used for the control group or what the wavelength is of the laser part of the RAP Device. The 3 clinical trial involved small numbers of patients (the largest being 22 patients with 32 tattoos) and only skin types 1-3 were studied. Not sure how it translates to the general population and darker skin types (Types IV-VI). Still, that’s some pretty impressive ink clearing. I could find no data yet on cost of the machine or cost per treatment. It’s always good to keep your eye on the horizon to see what your options are.
