There are two questions you will have to answer each time you come in for your laser tattoo removal treatments at Remove a Tattoo:
- Are you pregnant?
- Are you breastfeeding?
If you answer yes to either question, you will not be able to receive laser tattoo removal. The good news is that you can resume laser tattoo removal after you have delivered the baby or are finished breastfeeding.
While there are no concrete studies at this time indicating that there are risks associated with pregnancy and laser tattoo removal, it is better to be cautious and not do anything to risk harming the fetus or yourself.
Tattoo ink is not regulated by the FDA and often contains heavy metals or other toxins. The toxins from your tattoo ink could be passed on to the fetus or passed through milk when breastfeeding. These risks are unknown, but it is better to err on the side of caution.
The main known risk for pregnant women getting laser treatment is increased photosensitivity. Many changes happen to the body during pregnancy. One of the changes is that your skin can become more sensitive to all types of light, including lasers. During this time the risk for scarring and hyper-pigmentation from lasers is increased.
What if I get pregnant between laser treatments?
We recommend that you wait at least 8 weeks after your last treatment to become pregnant. This gives your immune system sufficient time to clear the ink away. Don’t panic, however, if you become pregnant sooner or receive treatment not knowing you were pregnant. The risks are theoretical. If you do become pregnant in the midst of your laser tattoo removal process, be sure you discuss your treatments and tattoo removal history with your OB provider.
Tattoo removal is a journey and we are very excited to be on this journey with you. This is why we advise being cautious with pregnancy and breastfeeding during the treatment process. Your overall health and the health of your baby are far more important than removing a tattoo.
