Many people thinking about laser tattoo removal are concerned about possibility of scarring. This concern is valid- it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to remove a tattoo and to be left with a scar. Scarring infrequently occurs with laser tattoo removal, but may also occur as a result of the application of the tattoo. During your free consultation, Dr. Brotzman will examine the skin to determine if scarring occurred or if there is any tissue damage.
We have posted about scarring in the past, but what about situations where there is scarring? What are the options for people with scars that still want to pursue laser tattoo removal? This post will discuss hypertrophic scarring and laser tattoo removal.
Hypertrophic scars are raised scars that result from trauma or wounds that may have had delayed healing. Hypertrophic scars may be red itchy or painful. If you have hypertrophic scars and a tattoo, you may not be able to see the scars, but the tattoo may feel raised or bumpy. Hypertrophic scars are not the same thing as keloid scars, but do share some similar characteristics.
There are a variety of methods available to treat hypertrophic scars when they occur without a tattoo. Silicone gel sheeting, pressure dressing, steroid injections, laser or surgery are some methods commonly used for treating scarring that does not go away on it’s own after a period of time. Hypertrophic scars can grow in size for up to 6 months and may go away on their own. In those cases treatment may not be necessary.
If it is determined that there is scarring or tissue damage from the tattoo application, tattoo removal is still a possibility. Once the ink has been removed, extra treatments from a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon may be needed to treat the raised skin. Laser tattoo removal is designed to treat the ink and will usually not have an effect on the raised skin or scarring. Depending on the health of the individual and the type and severity of scarring, a combination approach may be needed to get the desired results.
