We recently wrote about tattoo conventions and how the laser tattoo removal industry is earning a spot at these events. Tattoo conventions are great opportunities to meet other tattoo enthusiasts, get exposed to different types of body art and get tattooed from popular artists that travel to conventions. We have complied some tips and general etiquette to follow if you are planning to get a tattoo at a convention. Remember, we are not against tattoos – we are only against tattoo regret. So follow these tips to minimize your chances of regretting your tattoo convention tattoo!
- Plan Ahead. There is a lot to plan for when attending a tattoo convention, especially if you are attending one that is out of town. Make sure you book your rooms early and that you plan transportation. If you are planning on getting a tattoo at the convention, make sure you are able to follow aftercare instructions (no swimming or hot tub) and that you have a backup plan in case you need to seek medical care.
- Contact Your Artist Ahead of Time. Many artists fill their schedules before the event, so if there is a particular artist you are eyeing, it is best to contact them ahead of time. Other artists prefer to leave their schedules open. If this is the case plan to arrive early to make sure you get the artist you want. Be clear and open about what you want for the tattoo. If you aren’t able to get inked by your artist of choice and you don’t see someone else that you liked, it is ok to leave the convention without a tattoo. Getting a tattoo just to get one may result in some tattoo regret later on.
- Take Your Time. There is a lot to see at a tattoo convention and it can be overwhelming, so make sure to take your time. Getting a tattoo is exciting and sometimes when we are excited, we tend to rush into decisions. Make sure that any decision to get a tattoo is carefully thought out. Need a second opinion? Ask a friend along. Approach a decision to get tattooed as you would if you were going into a tattoo shop to minimize your chances of tattoo regret.
- Leave a Deposit (and a tip). Be prepared to leave a deposit when you book with an artist. Most artists require this to ensure you will show up for your appointment. Tattoo conventions are busy and the artist is there to do tattoos. You should also plan on leaving gratuity for your tattoo artist. Whatever the price is, if you are happy with your tattoo and it is done well, nothing says thank you better than a tip.
