There was a TV show in the 1960’s called Lost in Space. One of the characters was a kid named Will Robinson. He had a robot as his protector. Whenever Will would be in imminent danger, the robot would utter the classic phrase “Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!” Google it. Or ask anyone in their 50’s about this phrase and they will acknowledge the show’s name just from that one line.
I mention this to make a point; when it comes to do-it-yourself tattoo removal, I say “Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!”
If you look on the internet for tattoo removal, many do-it-yourself options pop up.
Costs of the products range from $15 to $150. The reviews on the various product web sites are very positive. The products are listed as all natural, effective and guaranteed. Want to know more about what you would be using? I tried without success to determine basic information such as determining where some products were made and who manufactures them. As for effectiveness, it seems there are very few objective reviews or product comparisons outside of the product’s domain. The few I found suggest the do-it-yourself creams are either ineffective or only slightly fade the tattoo. This makes sense when you remember that the ink from a tattoo is deep in the dermis (lower layer) of the skin. It would be difficult if not impossible for a topical cream to penetrate through the epidermis into the dermis to break up the ink.
My take on DIY tattoo removal is this: if there was a cream or other do-it-yourself remedy for tattoo removal that was safe and effective, you would know about it. Until that day comes, stick with what we know works. Your current 2 options are as follows: 1) excise the tattoo (would work for a small tattoo but will leave a scar and removal is in general limited to areas with loose skin) and 2) laser tattoo removal with a Q-switched laser such as those used at Remove A Tattoo.
