All tattoos have meaning. They may be tied to a special person, a special place, a special memory or a special time period. Even if you are experiencing tattoo regret or if getting the tattoo was an impulsive decision, there is something meaningful about your tattoo. What if you could make that tattoo even more meaningful? This was the driving question behind the creation of SKIN46, a tattoo ink company that makes customized tattoo ink from loved one’s hair.
Sounds pretty futuristic (and kind of creepy), right? Our loved ones have all gotten under our skin at some point, but now the technology is here where you can literally have them under your skin… forever. This blog post will discuss biogenic tattoos – tattoos made from human material.
How it works
According to their website, obtaining a SKIN46 tattoo is an easy process. First you send them some hair. The hair can be human or animal. You can use your own hair if you want. Come from a big family or really like your coworkers? Good news! You can send up to 10 different hair samples for your customized ink. The hair is then broken down through a patented production method that contains 65 steps, 22 control points and two supervisors. During this process clean carbon is obtained from the hair. Once they have the carbon, it is added to tattoo ink and returned to you. You bring the ink to a tattoo artist of your choice. The ink is black and there is enough ink for 30 small tattoos or 10 large tattoos.
Is it safe?
SKIN46 follows guidelines that are in line with the Tattoo Ink Regulation of Switzerland, which are supposedly the strictest ink regulations in the world. SKIN46 also meets the standards of tattoo ink guidelines in the United States. Remember, tattoos in the United States are considered a cosmetic procedure and it is very loosely regulated.
Even if getting a tattoo made from your loved one’s hair is in line with ink guidelines, it is important to remember that there still are risks with tattoos, one of which includes concerns with the tattoo ink and carrier solution. The ink choice is typically up to the tattoo artist. You can make a biogenic tattoo safer by doing research and discussing what ink products your tattoo artist uses.
It is also important to remember that new ink technology comes with a lot of unknowns. We don’t know how different technologies will change over time as your immune system tries to fight off the ink. We also don’t know how they respond to lasers should you choose to remove them someday.
