There are a lot of things that you can (and should) do at home. There are other things that you absolutely should not do at home. For efficiency, safety, and aesthetic reasons tattoo removal is something that should never be attempted at home. The fact of the matter is DIY (do it yourself) tattoo removal methods do not work. At best, they are ineffective and a waste of time and money. At worst, they can damage your skin and your health. Laser tattoo removal is one proven way to remove tattoos that is safe, effective and affordable.
Even though removing tattoos at home is not a good idea, the Internet is full of various products and methods promising tattoo removal that is easy, natural, pain-free, or free. We have discussed the myth of natural tattoo removal before (read about it here). Since there is so much information out there on home tattoo removal, we thought we would take a minute to review some of the methods.
Salabrasion – This method involves using salt and water to make an abrasive scrub that is designed to scrub your tattoo off. According to many DIY tattoo removal sites, salabrasion can take as long as 40 minutes and should be applied until the skin is raw and bruised. Risks with this method include infection, scarring, and damage to the surrounding tissue.
Sand Powder and Grinding Stone – (This hurts to even think about). This method is similar to salabrasion, only the abrasive material from the salt is replaced with sand. This is a bad idea and could be extremely painful, not to mention dangerous and ineffective. The reason the abrasion methods don’t work is because tattoo ink is injected into the dermis or the second layer of skin. That ink can only safely be reached with a laser or removed by cutting the tattoo out.
Honey – Honey is great for many things, but using it as tattoo removal paste sounds questionable (and sticky). This method involves making a paste from honey, yogurt and aloe vera gel and letting it sit on the tattoo for a half hour. There are not a lot of risks associated with this method, but it is a waste of time and will do nothing to fade your tattoo.
